Tenere 700: Airbox Wrapped with Thermo-Tec Reflective Heat Barrier + Battery Box Wrapped with Reflective Heat Tape

Airbox Wrapped with Thermo-Tec Reflective Heat Barrier

Wrapping the airbox with heat reflective insulation/tape can reduce intake air temps resulting in a more dense air/fuel ratio improving performance slightly (the motor & catalytic converter located directly below generate a lot of heat).

Airbox Removal

Note: this was not a stand alone job...the tank was off to facilitate replacement of the 7 rubber brake lines with a HEL Performance Braided brake line kit & repair a broken left cylinder spark plug connector locking tab.

Removal of the oem airbox is realatively easy once the tank (requires removal of front side panels), seats & side panels under the rider seat are removed (see step by step instructions via this link).

  • remove the airbox breather hose at the front top
  • loosen the 2 airbox/throttle body intake boot 4 mm allen head bolts (Tech Tip: do not completely undo to prevent the nut & spacer from falling off & getting lost in the motor area)
  • remove the two 10 mm bolt head rear tank mounting bolts on either side
  • push the plastic tab for the strap securing the large wiring harness to the frame on the left side out of its frame tab near the front left of the airbox (permits enough movement of the harness to get the airbox past it - see pic below)
  • remove the 4 bolts securing the front of the battery tray (this may actually be optional, but it provides a little for/aft movement of the metal bracket & front of the airbox providing more wiggle room for manuevering the airbox up & out.

Battery Box Wrapped in Reflective Heat Tape

I decided to take advantage of access to the front, bottom & catalytic converter/exhaust side of the battery box to wrap it with reflective heat tape to mitigate excess heat to the battery, fuses & electrical connections in that area. I also added 2 square foam strips to the bottom of the battery box (similar to the oem foam pads located to the inner front side) to provide added cushioning & air space for the battery.
