Tenere 700: Fuel Pump Replacement Tea Bag Filter, Installation Guide & PurMotors (formerly Guglatech) Fuel Filter M220-06 ARM
Tenere 700 Fuel Pump Replacement Tea Bag Filter
Yamaha does not list any service interval for the fuel pump & related filter, but it is worth ensuring that the entire fuel delivery system performs as per spec & with proper pressure. At 35k km or 22k miles the tea bag filter on my 2014 Super Tenere 1200 ES was dirty resulting in pressure drop that affected performance & fuel economy...the change is subtle & progressive so difficult to ascertain without a pressure test or physical inspection of the fuel pump.
As with the Super Tenere 1200, Tenere 700 & other models Yamaha does not sell just the fuel pump tea bag filter, instead requiring buying the entire pump assembly (#BW3-13907-00), BUT Suzuki, who uses the same Mitsubishi UC-T35 fuel pump on their V-Strom 650 & other models does sell it, part #15420-44G00, which can be sourced via 3rd party suppliers on AliExpress.

- The tank can be removed without complete removal of the front & side panels...see text in pics for instructions.
- TIP: Prior to disassembly take pics of fasteners, connectors, orientation of fuel pump or anything else of concern to assist with reassembly.
- NOTE: Yamaha 2021 Tenere 700 service manual tank removal/fuel pump info & fuel tank parts list located at the end of this blog.

- Do NOT stress the connected lines when lifting the tank
- Push the safety lock tab in to remove the electrical connector & ensure that the connector plug clicks firmly & fully seated when reinstalling...if you do NOT hear a click, try again...if NOT fully seated the connector may back out while riding cutting power to the pump & fuel gauge.
- Push the orange/brown fuel line safety lock forward to access the 2 side mounted push-in lock releases for removal of the fuel line connector from the pump & ensure that the connector clicks solidly on the fuel pump outlet then slide the orange safety lock back toward the fuel line for installation.
- After connecting the tank electrical & fuel connectors & air breather hose, but BEFORE reinstalling the tank & removed panels, ensure that the tank has a few litres of fuel & test operation of pump by turning on the ignition & waiting for the pump to fully pressurize before starting the bike. If all is working ok, the bike should start & clear itself of any stumbles within seconds of running & idle normally. IF the bike stalls & won't restart, see pic & info further below in this blog about the placement of the fuel pump internal o-ring...it needs to be on the male protrusion/shaft of the outer pump housing when reassembling the 2 halves of the pump to maintain adequate fuel pressure...if it gets pushed to the bottom of the hole (female end) as seen in the pic referenced below it will block fuel flow, not hold fuel pressure & stall the bike.

- Clean the underside of the tank prior to removal of the fuel pump to prevent debris from entering the tank.
- If fuel not fully drained from tank lock fuel cap on tank & place a tire valve stem cap or firm fitting plug over the tank air breather fitting before inverting tank to prevent fuel loss (position the tank with the fuel cap elevated enough so that fuel does not reach it & depending on amount of fuel remaining in tank place the tank on a tray to catch any leaking fuel)
- NOTE: Orientation in the pic below of the fuel pump for correct installation position to ensure proper connections & fuel float position (see pics of service manual further below)
- Gently lift the plastic housings over the locking tabs on 1 side & wiggle to unlock tabs, then repeat the process on the other side to separate the upper & lower halves. Use caution with sender assembly & float to not damage or bend.
- Remove fuel sender wires ONLY using a small flat head screw driver to push the connectors off the pins & to push back onto the pins.
- NOTE: Wire order & do NOT pull on the wires.
- NOTE: The orientation of the oem filter edge, in pic below, curved down to prevent blocking the metal fuel passage way.
- The replacement filter sock is slightly larger than the oem equivalent, however, the mounting base appears to be identical.
- NOTE: That the replacement filter comes with a small press on star locking washer while the oem filter did not utilize one on the metal locating pin. Yamaha likely deemed it redundant as the pump housing presses up to the clip-on plastic guard atop the filter preventing it from dislodging, as seen in the above pic + if it were to dislodge it may damage the pump or impact performance.
- NOTE: The o-ring MUST be inserted over the corresponding male protrusion/shaft during assembly of the 2 halves of the fuel pump assembly. It may take a few tries as the o-ring increases resistance, I found that just placing it over the beginning of the protrusion vs fully seated all the way on preferable...your mileage may vary 😀
- During reassembly ensure that that the 2 halves of the pump assembly fit together properly aligned & squared to each other with all 4 locking tabs clicking firmly in place...if misaligned, the pump may not stay locked together & separate causing a malfunction in fuel delivery.
- NOTE: When installing the fuel pump into the tank, the correct orientation of the gasket is with the flat side inserted into the fuel pump housing & the raised edge facing the fuel tank (see service manual page further below).
- Pic below of oem fuel filter shows what looks like small crystalized sediment...not sure if a breakdown of filter material or a foreign substance. I have been using a Guglatech M220-06 ARM fuel tank filter for 31k km & it had small traces of a chalk like material inside it that was able to be removed once the filter was dry.
- Interior view of my tank with the filler neck at the top shows a small amount of a chalk like material, other than that it was very clean with no film or gunk present.
- NOTE: That the inner edge of the tank fuel pump opening is very sharp.
Compatibility:
- Fits Yamaha Tenere 700
- Fits Yamaha Tenere 1200
- Fits Kawasaki Versys gas tanks
- Fits Honda Africa Twin 1000/1100 (domestic models)
- Also fits Suzuki V-Strom, Kawasaki Versys
- Also fits 2017-2022 Honda CRF Rally 250/350
Specifications:
- No upper flange; the upper neck ring snugs down into the tapered fuel tank filler nozzle
- Neck size: 37mm
- Filter size: 4″x8″
- Filter bag is centered on the nozzle
- Anti-abrasion outer mesh to protect against chafing inside the tank
Key Features:
- HDM3D Media: Innovative media with welded filter edges for optimal dirt and water segregation.
- Expedition Media: XL+ 600 square cm of filtering surface, allowing fast refueling. Washable and long-lasting.
- Water and Contaminant Separation: Acquastop technology separates water from fuel during refueling.
- Enhanced Filtration: Provides excellent protection for the fuel pump and main filter. The original system’s strainer, working between 40 and 60 microns, is inadequate for EFI systems. This filter extends the life of both the prefilter (40-60 microns) and paper filter (8-10 microns).
Installation:
- Special fuel neck prefilter designed to be mounted inside the original fuel cap.
- Simple drop-in, easy to insert and extract, no further modifications or mountings required.
- Installation could not be easier: remove the cap, insert the filter, and screw down the cap.
Additional Information:
- Double-check your bike’s make, model, year, gas tank design, and filler nozzle dimensions before ordering to ensure proper fitment.
- If you order the wrong filter, you are responsible for any shipping fees needed to replace it with the proper filter, plus any price differences.
- Filters that have been immersed in gas (or are not in like-new condition) are NOT eligible for return or refund.
