Tenere 700: Fuel Gauge Non-Linear & Correlation of # of Bars Displayed to Mileage Travelled

Tenere 700 Fuel Gauge is Non-Linear & Correlation of # of Bars Displayed to Mileage Travelled

The T700 doesn't begin showing change until it has been ridden awhile...here is the corresponding mileage for when each of the fuel bars disappeared (my 2nd tank of fuel). This is based on filling the tank to 1/2 way between the bottom of the filler neck (what Yamaha recommends) & to the top of the filler neck:

  • 6th bar @ 140 km (87 miles)
  • 5th bar @ 185 km (115 miles)
  • 4th bar @ 220 km (136 miles)
  • 3rd bar @ 240 km (149 miles)
  • 2nd bar @ 280 km (174 miles)
  • 1st Bar - starts blinking denoting reserve @ 300 km (186 miles)..then display counts up showing kms/miles...reserve =  4.3 litre or 1.14 us gal range is approx 70 - 100 km or 43 to 62 miles depending on conditions & your right wrist :)
Tank capacity = 16 litres or 4.2 us gal.  My on-board computer under calculates mileage by 1 to 2 km/l vs actual.  Average fuel mileage over 9 tanks & 3k kms = 23.6 km/l or 66.6 mpg (Imperial) or 55.5 mpg (US) which equates to a theoretical range of 377 km or 234 miles.  Low = 21.1 km/l high = 26.3 km/l
